The Department's description

Built in 1824-6 for Joseph Atkinson by an architect called Brownlees. The estate originally belonged to the Hoope family and passed to the Atkinsons through the marriage of Sarah Hoope to Joseph Atkinson in 1791. It passed out of Atkinson family ownership in 1952.
Previously there were two gate lodges associated with the house, both of pre-1834 date, but both now demolished.
