Exterior description and setting

A twin-arched rubble masonry bridge carrying a public road over the Tall River. It is aligned approximately north to south.

Semi-circular arches of rough stone voussoirs to both faces; salient angle pier to both faces which rise to form projecting refuges at parapet level on both faces; limestone copings to parapets. Soffits are later rendered. Carriageway slightly humped, with narrow pavement to each side at crest; grass verges beyond that. Parapets extend to form approach walls. Part of spandrel, parapet, and approach wall at south end on west side replaced in concrete blockwork.

SETTING: The bridge stands in a rural area with fields to each side.

Historical information

Precise date of structure not recorded but it appears on the OS map of 1834 and named 'Redmond's Bridge'. It may be taken to date from probably the late 18th century.

Evaluation

This is a late 18th century bridge which retains a refuge to each side sitting in a rural location with fields to all sides. The structure takes its name from the Redmond family who owned Grange Farm situate in lands adjacent to the bridge.
