Historical information
Built sometime between 1706 and 1723 for Edward Hoope; apparently out of use by the late 1830s and referred to as an 'old tower' by the 1860s when it was used as a dwelling; vacated by the early 1880s; all working parts removed by 1910 when a flat roof was substituted for the original conical roof, and crenellations built on it; occupied intermittently until c 1930, but unused since then.
Based on the 1723 will of Edward Hoope, this is the earliest authenticated windmill in Northern Ireland, predating such other early 18th century examples as are found at Newtownards (1729), Saintfield (1736), and Dungannon (1743).
