Exterior description and setting

A symmetrical single storey / three bay house of timber construction aligned N-S on a lane overlooking the road to the E of Agharoosky Townland.

Pitched artificial slate roof with brick chimney to party wall between central and right bay. Overhanging eaves with plain bargeboards over exposed rafter tails. Rainwater goods are gone. Walls are timber sheeted over a cement rendered base course. Windows are 2x3 timber side-hung casements with timber cills and moulded timber architraves (unless otherwise stated).

Principal elevation faces E. At centre is a t+g-sheeted entrance door accessed by a stone step and flanked by 1/1 sidelights with a three-part transom over. All are set in a moulded timber architrave. Left and right bays each have a window.

Left gable has a 1/1 sliding sash window to either side.

Rear elevation is completely abutted by a lean-to extension with a monopitched corrugated metal roof, concrete block walls and metal-framed windows. The extension wraps round the corner of the building to enclose right end of right gable. It has a 3x2 top-hung casement window to W elevation. N elevation has a door opening to left and a 4x2 top-hung casement to right. E cheek has a similarly detailed window.

Right gable is identical to left gable. The extension abuts to immediate right of right-hand window.

Setting:
The house occupies an elevated site overlooking the road and in accessed by a short lane. To front is a small cast-iron gate supported on two narrow cement-rendered gate-piers with stepped coping. Boundary fence is collapsed.

Historical information

Not shown on the first three editions of the OS 6” maps (up to 1907), and therefore presumably of a later date, possibly 1940s.

Evaluation

An interesting, symmetrical house constructed almost solely of timber in an area known for its wetlands and damp climate. Its occupies an elevated site and forms a pleasant landscape feature.
