Exterior description and setting

A detached two-bay two-storey stone farmhouse, built c.1870, located on the east side of Magheraliss Road. Rectangular on plan, facing north.

Remains of a pitched natural slate roof, projecting stone eaves, simple rendered chimneystacks at gables, no rainwater goods. Walling is random basalt rubble. Windows are square-headed (all missing with only remains of timber sash boxes).

Principal (north) elevation has windbreaker porch (with gable remains) to centre, ground floor has a single window flanking each side of porch and first floor has three windows.

East gable is abutted by remains of two-storey outbuilding, exposed section is blank.

Rear (south) elevation has variety of windows with bed out-shot to left bay with relieving arch over.

West gable is abutted by outbuilding, exposed section is blank.

Setting:-
The farmhouse is situated on a sloping lawned side with several mature trees in a farmyard complex. There is a ruinous two-storey two-opening-wide outbuilding with external stair abutting east gable, detailed as house; and there is a single-storey multi-bay rendered outbuilding with pitched corrugated metal roof abutting west gable. There is a detached single-storey multi-bay rendered outbuilding with pitched corrugated metal roof to north of farmhouse.

Historical information

The house first appears on the third edition OS map of 1905-6. A building on the site is listed in Griffith’s Valuation as occupied by Stephen McBride and valued at 15s, however, this is likely to refer to a building elsewhere on the plot. Annual Revision records name the lessor as A W C Hamilton and the value of the plot is raised to £2.5s in 1874 indicating the construction of a new house. The house continues to be occupied by the McBride family throughout the period of Annual Revisions (1860-1929). Francis McBride becomes the owner in fee in 1909.

Evaluation

A detached two-bay two-storey stone farmhouse, built c.1870. The symmetrical and well proportioned farmhouse is on the interface between vernacular and formal design, with a simple plan form and with its farmyard setting. While of local interest it is of a relatively late date and common type and insufficient fabric survives to merit listing.
