Exterior description and setting

A detached three-bay two-storey stone farmhouse, built c.1850, located on the south side of Glenmacoffer Road, Omagh. Rectangular on plan, facing north-east; lean-to windbreaker porch to front, bed outshot to rear.

Pitched natural slate roof (remains of), rendered chimneystack, dressed stone eaves corbel. Walling is coursed random rubble, dressed quoins. Windows are square-headed painted timber 6/6 sliding sashes with sills.

Principal (north-east) elevation is symmetrical abutted to centre by porch; exposed section remaining bays each have a single window. Porch is missing doors, cheeks are blank.

South-east gable is abutted by outbuilding. Exposed section is blank.

Rear (south-west) elevation has bed outshot to right with single window opening to left of bed outshot at ground floor, blank at first floor level.

North-west gable is abutted by outbuilding (collapsed); exposed section is blank with pitched ghostmark of collapsed outbuilding.

Setting:-
The farmhouse is situated on gently sloping ground in an enclosed grassy farmyard with modern gates and posts. Outbuilding to south is single-storey with pitched corrugated metal roof and has blank gable. Outbuilding to north is double-height with pitched corrugated metal roof and rendered walling, gable is blank, cheeks each have a single square-headed entrance opening (door missing) to centre.

Historical information

The house first appears on the second edition OS map of 1854 together with a smaller building to the north, now gone. By the third edition of 1905-6 a large outbuilding has appeared to the north. By the fourth edition of 1953 both these buildings have been extended, the house to the east and the outbuilding to the west.

In Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) both buildings present at that time are listed as dwellings and valued at 10s each. They are occupied by the McCullagh family and leased from Major A W C Hamilton. In revisions of 1872 the buildings are valued as a single house and offices at £2.5s. The value is raised to £2.15s in 1875 indicating some improvements. Atty McCullagh becomes the owner in fee in 1909.

Evaluation

A detached three-bay two-storey stone farmhouse, built c.1850. The classically styled farmhouse in a farmyard setting is on the interface between vernacular and formal design with a simple plan form and featuring a symmetrical principal elevation but a nearly blank rear elevation with a bed outshot and relieving arch. The combination of two storeys with a bed outshot is unusual. However, insufficient fabric survives to merit listing and there are other, better examples listed.
