Exterior description and setting

A small one and a half storey lodge, of rectangular plan, gabled and slated, with a chimney on the west gable. Main entrance faces south. South facade contains a rectangular doorway to the right and a rectangular window to the left, both set in flat arches. Front elevation built of roughly squared and coursed basalt, painted white; arches over openings painted black. Modern door with single recessed plywood panel; two-light window, side-hung casements, not original. West gable built of basalt rubble, unpainted; two small attic windows, blocked up. Rear elevation walling of basalt rubble, unpainted; one small rectangular window, blocked up; cast iron rainwater goods. East gable as west, with one attic window, blocked up; projecting from east gable, a curving screen wall of basalt rubble terminating in secondary gateway to Kilwaughter Castle; square piers of basalt rubble, one to left now truncated.

Setting: The building stands in a rural location facing a main road with a low single-storey modern shed standing behind it.

Built as a secondary entrance lodge to Kilwaughter Castle. Appears on the OS map of 1832.

Evaluation

This is a late Georgian building of modest scale built in a plain style, which is of some interest due to its association the Kilwaughter Estate, but this building and its adjacent gateway have lost some of their original features in the course of inappropriate alterations.
