Exterior description and setting

A small single-storey gabled and slated house of rectangular plan with an attic, originally built as a school. Chimney on west gable. Modernised, with walls cement rendered Tyrolean style, painted white but up to eaves level only on the gables; PVC rainwater goods; modern flush roof lights to rear; concrete cills. North facing entrance front has a modern rectangular panelled door flanked by a rectangular window to each side. Inscription plaque on front wall. Grassed area in front of house, with a front boundary wall of concrete blockwork.

Setting: the building stands on a bend in the road in a rural location, viewed against a background of mature trees.

Historical information

Built by local subscription in 1810. Plaque on front wall is inscribed “Kilwaughter Female National School 1810”. Appears on OS map of 1832.

This is a late Georgian building of modest scale and very plain style whose main interest depends on its inscription plaque which proclaims its original function as a school, but whose original architecture has been changed by inappropriate alterations.
