Exterior description and setting

A large two-storey red brick house with gabled roofs on an asymmetrical plan, standing on a sloping site in a rural
setting outside a village.

Main entrance faces east, located in a single storey porch on the south elevation. Main south elevation three-bay, with projecting porch. Walls of plain red brick with notched brick string course at first floor level. Gabled roofs of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; white painted timber barge boards with shaped brackets and decorative finials; wall-head dormer similar; red brick chimneys. Windows timber sliding sash, one over one, with horns, Gothic headed to top floor, rectangular headed below. Cross of modelled bricks in circular panel in apex of main gable. Cast iron rain water goods. Front door pine sheeted in herring-bone pattern, set in Gothic arch.

West elevation similar character to south, with single-storey yard enclosure at basement level where site slopes down.

North elevation similar with rectangular door to basement.

East elevation has single-storey canted bay with ashlar dressings in red sandstone.

Historical information

Built as the rectory for St John’s C of I church, Glynn; date of construction not known but probably dates from the 1880s and may be attributed to the architect S.P. Close of Larne; ceased to be a rectory in the 1980s.

This is a substantial house still standing in an unspoiled condition, of some local interest due to its former connection with a substantial church in the same locality, but of only moderate architectural interest.
