Exterior description and setting

A 2 storey stone building 6 bays long.

The NW façade, parallel to No.s 51/59 Ann Street, and fronts onto the intervening space to the rear of them. At ground floor there are 2 built up square headed gateways and a number of small window openings trimmed with brick. There is also at first floor a built-up narrow doorway. The walls built of random rubble sandstone with good quoins. That portion of façade to the NE has poor stonework, though with original mortar. The NE gable has a single 4 panel door at the top of a short flight of steps. Stonework rough rubble. The gable is joined to No. 59 by a stone wall and separated from it by a gate.

The S long façade has a haphazard arrangement of small openings at ground and first floor. A new sorting office building has been erected at right angles to it and connected to it by a short covered way, this is roofed with a double pitched slated roof. Under the covered way is a door access to the store and alsoto the sorting office. At the NE end of this façade is a brick trimmed segmental arch partially exposed. It may have been bridging a stream, though there is no evidence of one.

The SW gable has no openings. The roof over ¾ of the store has been reroofed in natural slate, the remainder as original. There is a rooflight, no chimneys.

The stone built store lies behind No.s 51/59 Ann Street and the space between them used as access to flats there.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it appears for the first time on the OS map of 1904. Precise original function not known but it was probably built as outbuildings for the buildings at nos. 51 and 59 Ann Street.

Evaluation

This is a masonry built store of probably late 19th century date, which is of little historic or architectural interest except for its relationship with the nearby listed buildings. Part of it has fallen into partial dereliction while another part has been linked to a modern building which spoils its original integrity.
