Exterior description and setting

Large and relatively plain three storey shop with dwelling of 1896-97 with original shop front. The building is set on the NW side of Ann Street on the NE side of Ballycastle town centre.

The asymmetrical front elevation faces roughly SE. Ground floor, from left : a shop front with central recessed shop doorway with pair of wood framed and glazed doors with good ironmongery, fanlight, on each side display window in single pane, with moulded panelling below cills. Narrow display window flanking each side of recessed entrance. Good glass name fascia over with gold lettering and surface decoration on either side. The whole frame with panelled pilasters. Over fascia pull out awning. Good scrolled stops at each end of fascia. Beyond shopfront entrance to living accommodation, a 6 panelled moulded and fielded door, plain and framed fanlight, good door knob and vertical letterbox all set in a classical doorcase with pilasters, frieze and pediment. Another smaller shop window, with tripartite display window, with series of small panes on top and a large centre display pane. Moulded panel below cill as before. Over a small framed name fascia. At 1st floor 4 no. sliding sash 2 pane windows with moulded architraves and 2 corbels under cill : and similar windows at 2nd floor of lesser height.

Eaves overhang with ogee gutter, single downpipe. Walls smooth rendered, lined, unpainted with rusticated quoins not carried down to pavement level.

At rear building has off centre shallow 3 storey back return with lean-to roof (probably contains stair landings and a 2 storey 1 bay long return projecting from it with double pitched roof. To the right of the returns, double light 2 pane windows on each floor, upper pane top hung, other windows 2 pane.

Roofs natural slates, chimneystacks on gables and 2 velux type rooflights to rear slope. The building observes the terrace building line. To the rear a small enclosed yard at ground level and a straight flight of steps leading to long well kept garden on level with 1st floor and with a good paved terrace.

Historical information

This property was built in 1896-97 by George Haughey on what had previously been vacant ground. It remains in the hands of Mr Haughey’s descendants.

[*Note on primary sources- Though Ballycastle has its full compliment of valuation books dating back to 1834, the earliest extant valuation plan of the town (indeed the earliest large scale plan) is that dating from 1898. This means that though the first and second valuations (of 1834 and 1859 respectively) present the usual detailed accounts of properties throughout the town, bereft of their contemporary plans it is almost impossible to discover exactly to which buildings the valuers are referring. The writer has circumvented this problem however by adopting the somewhat involved method of reading the records backwards- i.e. taking the more recent (mid 20th century) valuations and tracing each building back from these, using the 1898 map as a marker along the way.]
