Exterior description and setting

Former thatched cottage with steeply pitching corrugated metal roof and long adjoining wing of barns of similar height. The building aligns north west and is parallel to the sand dunes in front. A large modern barn with curved metal roof aligns with the house and sits in the courtyard to the front. The building is harled and whitewashed,has a sheeted door and three chimneys.Windows are side hung casements. To the rear a return with flat roof and door, and four small windows.

Historical information

Building indicated on 1831 map built circa 1790 and always in possession of the one family, who also owned the nearby pub. Thatch replaced in 1950s. Roof structure changed similar date.

Evaluation

A good example of a farmhouse complex of a type once common in the Magilligan area. Building aligning with the direction of the prevailing wind forming a very long line of construction. The width of the buildings is greater than vernacular buildings in Inishowen opposite or inland in the Sperrins. In this cottage the top and bottom rooms have been sub divided and original doors have been preserved, a variant on the more common three room plan. Alterations preclude listing.
