Exterior description and setting

A one and a half storey semi-detached dwelling occupying two bays of a three structural bay composition with its neighbour. Heavily renovated, PVC windows and projecting glazed porch near the gable out of proportion with the composition but matching the size of its neighbour. Dormer with pitch also matching neighbour on porch bay. Flat roofed two window wide dormer on central bay. Two PVC windows below, one to each bay with projecting slate lean-to. Bay window in gable of recent construction. Pitch of roof altered to rear to extend out over kitchen extension.

Historical information

House indicated on this site on 1853 OS Map. The record photograph taken on the1970 survey shows a single building with harled and whitened walls, hipped natural slate roof, two sand cement rendered chimneys on the ridge. Small single pain casement windows at first floor with curved heads (3No) 4 pane sash windows aligning below except at the south end where the window is slightly out of line and converted to a modern fixed window with top opening light. Tile roofed porch to south with white washed walls below & large window to road. Dominant impression is of the large area of solid wall to small windows. The building looks like a former coastguard or police station but is not marked as such on any map. The differences in windows may mean that the building was divided in 1970.The building has been renovated beyond recognition during the intervening years. The occupant did not give any information on its history.

Evaluation

Part of an unusual three bay building in which the two houses are not of the same size. Possibly of some architectural merit in 1970, but now so heavily renovated that this character is obscured.
