Exterior description and setting

A one and a half storey house, semi-detached, gabled, with dormer. Walls are smooth rendered and colour washed. Front elevation faces onto a garden enclosed by a rendered block wall with Culmore Road beyond. Glazed timber porch of more recent construction than the house and out of proportion. Single window to side with three vertical mullions of recent date. Window at ground floor in gable, large garden to this side. Man made slate roof, rendered chimney. Flat roofed kitchen extension to rear. Renovated doorway.

Historical information

House indicated on this site on 1853 OS Map. The record photograph taken on the1970 survey shows a single building with harled and whitened walls, hipped natural slate roof, two sand cement rendered chimneys on the ridge. Small single pain casement windows at first floor with curved heads (3No) 4 pane sash windows aligning below except at the south end where the window is slightly out of line and converted to a modern fixed window with top opening light. Tile roofed porch to south with white washed walls below & large window to road. Dominant impression is of the large area of solid wall to small windows. The building looks like a former coastguard or police station but is not marked as such on any map. The differences in windows may mean that the building was divided in 1970.The building has been renovated beyond recognition during the intervening years. The occupant did not give any information on its history.

Evaluation

Part of an unusual three bay semi-detached building in which the two houses are not of the same size. Of unusual architectural merit when visited in 1970, but now so heavily renovated that this character is obscured.
