Exterior description and setting

No. 172 a two storey, end of three terrace, three bays wide, rendered Tyrolean externally, gabled, asbestos slate roof with rendered chimney. Between floors on entrance elevation a pitched band (two courses) of natural slates running length of house. The ground floorfront external wall is thicker than upper floor which steps back. Door is centred in elevation with tripartite window on south side with wooden sliding sashes, four panes right and left and 12 panes in centre. Window on north side is timber sliding sash with 16 panes. Door has nine panes in upper half. On first floor timber sliding sash windows more or less centred on those below. That on south side has 12 panes (four panes wide) that on north side nine panes.

Door and windows have reveals painted black with black plinth. A narrow black band frames the elevation. The first floor windows are not high but fill the wall height from top of slate band to underside of eaves. There is no overhang with half round metal gutter and simple downpipe at gable. The slate band drains into metal ogee gutter.

The house has been extended by a further pile erected to the rear with its gable filled with matching timber sash windows with small panes very much in keeping with the entrance elevation. French doors are likewise treated. The same type of window fenestration is used on the rear elevation of extension.

This end of terrace house has extensive garden, front, side and rear. The terrace is set well back from Culmore Road and is attractive.

Historical information

The terrace is indicated on the OSS 14 1830 and it is probable that it was single storey at that time and erected as tenant houses by the Culmore Estate or the Irish Society. The upper floor was probably added after 1860.

Evaluation

A pleasing late Georgian style terrace cottage, later improved very sympathetically in mid-Victorian period. The house and terrace make a picturesque arrangement set in well kept gardens.
