Exterior description and setting

A detached two storey, roughcast rendered villa, slated with four prominent gables on each facade with one tall slightly battered chimney stack and another low gable stack. The lateral gables have same ridge line as main roof with north west gable projecting beyond main wall.

The gabled entrance facade, south west, has a projecting glass entrance porch with flat roof and a canted bay almost on the west corner, the windows of which are asymmetrically arranged. Ground floor windows are generally sliding sash with two panes though there is a modern window on the south east side where there is also a projecting canted bay with flat roof.

First floor windows are arranged in a series of five and six, on each gable and each group contained within a smooth rendered surround with a straight label moulding across the top. A small rectangular window is placed in each main gable.

Roofs have plain wood fascias and barges painted, gutters and downpipes, ogee and rectangular in pressed metal. Entrance porch constructed in timber with slim glazing bars and panelled wall below low cill. Veranda on north west side constructed of timber posts.

Sited on a steeply sloping wooded brae overlooking the east bank of the River Foyle the building enjoys splendid views of river and city. It is part of park laid out in the late 1840s and on which 11 villas have been built over the period 1845 to 1907. Some of the villas are detached whilst others are semi-detached and the whole group has maintained a leafy prospect in this part of the city close to the town centre.

Historical information

House erected by Dunn c1907 and called Dunnfield cottage and probably the same Dunn family who built the 1st house in Victoria Park i.e. Hillmount formerly Dunnfield c1845. Shortly after the cottage was built Phillips family bought it and retained ownership of until recently.

An Edwardian style small villa with slight overtures of Arts & Crafts style in arrangement of first floor windows but the general composition is untidy.
