Exterior description and setting

A two storey square plan house with three storey side return with smooth rendered and painted walls. The house is three bay wide on entrance front and two bays deep. It has double pile natural slated roofs set at right angles to the staircase hall which traverses the depth of the house. Yellow brick chimneys on roof ridges, good eaves overhang on three sides. Cast iron rainwater goods.

Sited on elevated position on steeply sloping wooded ground overlooking the River Foyle with ½ hectare of garden and tennis court.

Historical information

This house is shown on Piffler and Cowen’s map of 1848-9 and it is likely to be a year or two later than Hillmount (originally Dunnfield). There appears to be little plan change since that date. The house was known as the Warren. Griffiths V B 1858 gives the resident as R W Newton as lessee and Robert Dunn as lessor with a valuation of £65. However R W Newton at a later date of 1874 is given as residing at Hillmount. He was a flour merchant in the city and a governor of the Infirmary.

Evaluation

An early Victorian house in Georgian style with double roof on a square plan and reasonable proportions. Thereis some interesting Victorian plasterwork internally with high ceilings, internal space proportions reasonable. Enjoys fine setting overlooking river. Forms part of good early riverside park development.
