Drinagh and Artramon (WX037-007----) in Shelmaliere East are thought to be the principal centres of Roches in Wexford from the 13th century. John Roche of Drinagh was the seneschal, or governor, of Wexford in 1408 and Roches of Drinagh are mentioned regularly thereafter. A castle is marked on the Down Survey map (1655-8) at Drinnagh (Hore 1921, 88-90). According to the Civil Survey Robert Roche owned 129 acres at Drinagh in 1641 as well as 69 acres at Jacketstown in Drinagh parish, and 124 acres at Latimerstown in Rathaspick parish (Simington 1953, 299). A small structure (dims c. 10m x. 5m) is described as the site of a castle on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated on a level, low-lying landscape just E of Drinagh House and c. 250m from the W shore of the South Slob of Wexford harbour. There are no visible remains at ground level in a cereal crop.
