Moated site

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on a slight N-facing slope with an E-W stream c. 140m to the N. This is a rectangular area (dims. 18m NE-SW; 16m NW-SE) in mixed woodland with raised corners, especially at E and N that are a result of a quarried interior. It is defined by a flat-bottomed moat (Wth of top 8-11m; Wth of base 3.5-6m; int. D 1.4m at SW to 2.3m at the E corner). There is a berm attached to the outer edge of the moat base (Wth c. 3m) on the SE side, probably the result of a partial recut of the moat, and there is an outer bank (Wth c. 2m; ext. H 1m) on the NW and SW sides, that is probably not original. A leat from the SW enters the moat at the S corner and exits from the N corner to the stream. (Barry 1977, 218, WX 39)
