Burnt mound

The National Monuments Service's description

Identified in centre-line testing (E4110) in advance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy road scheme and set aside for resolution as Moyne Middle 1 (Hardy et al. 2010, 115-6). It is situated on a NW-facing slope with a small canalised NE-SW stream c. 30m to the NW. It was completely excavated (E4206) by Y. Whitty when two spreads of broken and burnt stone (dims 5m x 9m; T 0.05m: 6m x 2.1m; T 0.1m) were found in conjunction with four pits (dims 0.68m x 0.49m; D 0.13m: 0.74m x 0.68m; D 0.37m: 1.2m x 0.83m; D 0.3-0.43m: 3.5m x 1.2m; D 0.4-0.88m). While no trough was identified, the largest pit may have served as a store for stones. Some iron was recovered from one of the burnt stone spreads, but it may be intrusive. The fulacht fia (WX020-091----) is c. 50m to the NE. (Hardy 2012; Whitty 2013)
