The National Monuments Service's description
A limestone slab formerly fixed to the N wall of the nave of Athassel Abbey (TS068-013----) and now stored on-site. It bears a latin inscription, in false relief, in black letter script which appears to read, 'ANNO DOi [the i is in superscript form] MCCCCIIIVI' [1436] with a superscript of five zeros above in unusually large lettering and bearing no obvious relationship to the date below. It has been suggested that the stone carver may not have been familiar with Latin and that the correct usage would place a zero after every number (pers. comm. Gerard Crotty August 2011). If that is the case then the carver failed to divide the date as the zeros are in a continuous row above and he has added an extra zero.
