The National Monuments Service's description
Lying in the choir of the cathedral (TS061-025003-) on the Rock of Cashel. A tapering slab (L 1.84m; Wth at top 0.6m; Wth at base 0.45m; T 0.07m) with a small break in the lower dexter corner (Maher 1997, 74). The decoration is described by Maher (1997, 74) as, 'a seven-armed segmental cross carved in relief with simple fleur-de-lis terminals. Three cross-bands occur at the base of the cross-head, surmounting the cross-shaft. One single such band occurs at the base of the shaft, surmounting a pillar-base form. An inscription in Black Lettering occurs along both sides, across the top and base of the slab, and along the cross-shaft and base. It reads: HIC IACET IVILLS? IKEARNY CONUBIUS CANCTI PATRICII A CASSELO QUI OBIIT VII DIE / MENSIS MAII / ANO DNI M CCCCC III CUI AIE PPICIET ... S ET PATRICIUS OKEARNY FIL /IUS EIUS D...ET...FIERI FECIT.... (Here lies [Julius?] O'Kearny attendant [of the Church] of Saint Patrick of Cashel who died 7th day of May, A.D. 1503 on whose soul may God have mercy and Patrick O'Kearny, his son [who caused this tomb to be made?]). Conubius is, perhaps, not classical Latin but Church Latin meaning 'Servant of God'?'.
