The National Monuments Service's description
Lying in the choir of the cathedral (TS061-025003-) on the Rock of Cashel. A tapering slab (L 2m; Wth at top 0.88m; Wth at base 0.76m), the upper portion of which is cracked on the dexter side and the lower portion has only a few fragments surviving which are cemented into position (Maher 1997, 72). It is decorated in relief with a seven-armed segmental-headed cross, each arm terminating in a fleur-de-lis (ibid.). There is a three-barred knop at the base of the cross-head, however the lower part of the cross does not survive (ibid.). A latin inscription, in Black Letter script, occurs on the two sides, base and top and on either side of the cross-shaft (ibid.). The inscription was transcribed by FitzGerald (1901-03, vol. 5, 439) as: HIC JACET PETRUS CANTUUELL FILIUS ... Q OBIIT ... with placenames on the opposite side ...POITILIBAN ET O ICESTO and along the cross-shaft, ET COULKEN. Maher (1997, 72) adds: ...ET OWLKEIN MENSIS and gives the translation as 'Here lies Peter Cantwell son of _ who died _'.
