The National Monuments Service's description
Located at the tip of a NW-SE spur. A circular enclosure is depicted here only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’. It was described in 1940 (SMR file) as a circular raised area defined by a scarp (H c. 1.5m) which had a stone wall or stone facing although the perimeter had been quarried W-NW. By 1968 the stone element was removed and it was visible as a raised and overgrown circular area (diam. 31m N-S; 28.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (at S: Wth 2.2m; H 1.35m). There is no visible fosse and the entrance is probably the ramp (Wth of base 2m) at SSE. The interior is bisected by a NE-SW field bank. Archaeological testing (21E0038) by C. Duffy c. 40m to the NW at the closest point produced no related material (excavations.ie 2021:418).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
