Fulacht fia

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated c. 6m SW of a small stream on a flattish patch of ground immediately S of Michael Gerry O’Malley’s house, and the road leading to Kinnacorra Point. The land in the area falls generally eastwards towards Kinnacorra Point. Two other fulachtaí fia (MA085-049----, MA085-057----) lie within 100m of the monument.

The fulacht fia comprises of a very low, grassy, U-shaped mound (SE–NW 8.25m, SW–NE 6.6m, H. c. 0.45m on NW side) opening towards NE. It consists of two almost separate mounds forming the arms of the fulacht fia that are separated by a saddle-like depression at the point where they join. The north-western arm is oval in plan, but the south-eastern one has been partially dug away, leaving a shallow crater-like feature along its southern side that has distorted the ground plan in this area. Heat-fractured stone is exposed here. A small boulder (L c. 0.4m) lies on the western slope of the mound. A geophysical survey was carried out on this monument in 1993, but the results added little in the way of new information (see Slater 1996, labelled MN 101 and Kulessa 1993, 54).
