In pasture, 55m W of townland boundary with Ballynamoloogh and 85m SW of townland boundary with Flemingstown. ‘Gotoon fort’ (LI048-030----) lies 310m to the NE. Depicted as a non-antiquity on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map, where it is shown as a rectangular-shaped field. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped area (dims. c. 40m NW-SE; 42m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank reduced to a scarp at NW with fosse from SW-W, intersected at NW by post-1700 field boundary running N-S and at S by a drain running NE-SW. Described by Westropp (1916-17, 22, 475, 494) as a ‘straight-sided fort’ and ‘is slightly irregular; the entrance is to the east, and fosse is deep and full of water to the south-east, but nearly obliterated, and marked by yellow “flaggers” (iris) to the north, though fairly preserved to the west. It is 5 feet [1.5m] deep at the last point, and the mound 12 feet [3.6m] high; the bank steep and perfect, 12 feet [3.6m] thick and 8 feet [2.4m] high; the corners very sharp; evidently, therefore, the stone facing was removed in comparatively recent times. The sides measure from corner to corner - the east 105 feet [32m], north 135 feet [41m], west 126 feet [38.4m], south 153 feet [46.6m], diagonally north-west and south-east 150 feet [45.7m]. Monument visible as rectangular-shaped area enclosed by a tree-lined bank on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
