Road - class 2 togher

Originally recorded as a substantial structure (exposed L 27.5m; Wth 1.2m) located immediately to the WSW of a drain shoulder. The remains were being milled close to the drain but extended under the milled surface, which rose towards the centre of the field. The surface consisted of a superstructure of longitudinal, densely packed, small and large brushwood. This was underlain by a substructure of four longitudinal planks (Wth 0.12-0.3m), two if which were closely set in the middle, while the other two formed both edges. The gap between the S and central planks was 0.5cm, while the corresponding gap on the N side was 0.35m. The gaps were filled with brushwood. Some of the brushwood extended into the bog surface at an angle of c. 45º (Dunne 1999, 10, 99LBW0026A). Excavation revealed that there may be two toghers here. Longitudinal small brushwood with three larger pieces of brushwood, orientated NE-SW forming boundaries and an internal spine of the togher, were uncovered (Dunne 2002l, 206). This may be part of another togher (LF022-085----) located 50m away.
