The National Monuments Service's description
At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny. A mensa, composed of fossiliferous limestone, for a chest tomb or a ledger commemorating Peter Stroude and Margaret ? (d. 1615). The tomb was recorded by Carrigan as being partially ‘covered by pulpit’, which at the time was at the NE corner of the crossing (Canon W. Carrigan notebooks, St Kieran’s College Archive, Kilkenny, notebook 19). The marginal inscription in Latin black letter reads:
HIC JACET PETRUS STROUDE QUONDAM BUGENSIS CIVITATIS KILKENNIE QUI OBIT [ ] DIE [ ] ET MARGARETA [COVERED BY PULPIT] QUI OBIT [ EPULCHE AWAY] 1615
It translates as, Here lies Peter Stroude burgess of the city of Kilkenny who died [ ] day [ ] and Margaret … who died … 1615.
The left edge has been broken rendering the remaining inscription indecipherable.
