Tomb - chest tomb

Lying on the ground in the SE angle of the chancel of Tullaroan church (KK018-032001-), 1.92m from the S wall and 0.62m from the E wall. The limestone lid (L 1.89m; Wth 0.76m; T 0.15m) of a chest tomb commemorating Peter Butler, lord of Bouncestown (d. 31st January 1575), and his wife Helen Grace (Cockerham and Harris 2001, 183). It is decorated with a seven-armed segmental cross with fleur-de-lys terminals and banded shaft. There is a three-bar knop under the cross head and the cross-shaft rests on a stepped base. The inscription, in latin, in raised Black Letter script, begins in the upper dexter corner and continues around the border (Wth 0.1-0.13m). It is transcribed in Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 494), as: HIC JACENT PETRUS BUTLER QUONDAM DNS DE BOONCESTOWNE QUI OBIIT ULTI[M]O DIE MENSIS JANUARII ANNO Di. M˚CCCCC˚LCC˚V˚ ET HELENA GRACE EIUS UXOR Qᵉ OBIIT [ ] DIE MENSIS [ ] A˚Dⁱ M˚CCCCC [ ].
