On the N bank of the Dinin river, near the confluence with the Deen river, on a low-lying valley floor. According to the OS Letters (1839, 19-20), of the old church of Dysart, 'the ruins, with the greater part of the burial ground [KK010-025002-], were swept away by one of the frightful torrents (to which that river is liable) several years ago, a small portion only of the burying ground now remaining, protected by a stone wall on the river side' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 7). The church of Dysart, in the deanery of Ossory is mentioned in the taxation of the diocese of Ossory in 1312 (Shearman 1876-8, 194-5). Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 162) writes that, in ‘1392 Robert Colkings was Vicar of Dysert. John O’Tonory, Bishop of Ossory (1554-65), appropriated the Church of “Desard-in-Dogh” to the Vicars Choral of St. Canice’s’. He goes on to say that the ‘pattern of Dysart was held, not on the festival of the patron Saint, but on the 29th of September, the dies dedicationis of the ancient church’ (ibid.).
The church is not visible at ground level.
