The National Monuments Service's description

On a natural flat-topped hillock 1-2m above the valley floor with a small stream c. 20m to the N. There are good views across the valley in all directions. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 281) the castle was founded by or belonged to the Cody family. There is a castle (KK003-004001-) roughly centrally placed within the bawn. Carrigan states that the castle ‘stood within a raised area, enclosed by a wall, now almost entirely broken down’ (ibid.). The raised area (max. dims. 40m x 40m; H 2m) is enclosed by a wide external fosse (Wth 4m; D 1m). There is a steep ramped entrance mid-way along the S side. A second entrance at the NW angle may be modern. Running almost the entire length of the W side, 2m from the edge of the platform, there is a low bank (H 0.3m; Wth 1.5m) which is likely to be the remains of the W wall of the bawn. There is also a slight bank (H 0.3m; Wth 1m) along the edge of the N side of the platform which turns southward at the NE angle for c. 8m where it is 4m from the E edge of the platform. There are some short low banks (max. L 6m) at right angles to the N bank, and one at right angles to the E bank (L 3m) which may be the remains of buildings (KK003-004005-) built up against the bawn wall.
