Burial ground

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture, on a N-facing slope. A subrectangular area (46m E-W; 42m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank with external stone facing. There is a gap in the bank (Wth c. 2m) at the SE corner. The interior is raised slightly. The remains of a stone sheepfold occur in the SW corner. There is a suboval mound (H 0.55m; 22m N-S; 9m E-W) of earth and stone in the SW sector. A depression in the centre of the mound is the result of quarrying. Some unmarked headstones, the majority of which have fallen, are visible on the W side of the mound. A bullaun stone (KE057-050001-) and a broken rotary quern (diam. 0.75m; T 0.85m) were discovered within the mound material. According to local information, during the 1960s/70s people would visit the graveyard on the 1st November and throw a stone on the mound for every decade of the rosary said. Unbaptised babies and travellers are said locally to have been buried here. Three rectangular buildings are indicated within the graveyard on the 1846 OS 6-inch map.
