Shanasta/Seaneasta (old abode) is a univallate ringfort consisting of a circular area enclosed by a well-defined bank of earth and stone and an external fosse. The enclosing bank has a maximum external height of 4m and 3m above the interior. The width of the bank at the base is 7m on average. The enclosing fosse is well defined, though this can best be seen N to W, and measures c2.4m wide and 1m deep. According to local tradition, this ringfort was used as a children's burial ground (KE005-091001-) (John O'Donovan OSNB).
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 318. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
