Dalkey is a medieval manorial centre with borough status from the middle of the thirteenth century (McNeill 1950, 113). In 1326 there were 39 burgesses (ibid 195). It was the best deep port close to Dublin and was in use during the thirteenth century (Sweetman 1875-86, I, No. 2671). In the fourteenth century it became a supply centre and depot for ferrying men and goods to assist Edward the I's campaign in Scotland and Wales (D'Alton 1838, 445). In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was a bastion of the Pale and the weekly market and fair were held there (McNeill 1950, 247). The town plan is linear and is based on a single street i.e. Castle Street with a number of laneways which run perpendicular to the street. The market place was held in Castle Street, which expands towards its eastern end. Monitoring of groundworks in 2003 at 46-47 Castle Street exposed medieval deposits containing animal, bird and fish bones. Numerous sherds of medieval pottery, mostly of local manufacture were recovered (McQuade 2006, 114-5).
