The National Monuments Service's description
This is one of two poorly preserved corn-drying kilns (CO067-086006-) that were uncovered within an early medieval enclosure (CO067-086----) during excavations along the route of the N25 Youghal Bypass in 2001. The remains of the kiln comprised a collapsed NE-SW orientated stone flue (3.1m E-W x 0.9m N-S) that lead to an oval chamber (3.2m N-S x 2.4m E-W) at the SW end. Both the flue and chamber were contained in a roughly rectangular area of intense heat oxidisation. This corn-drying kiln truncated the S arc of an adjacent circular structure (CO067-086001-). A 2-sigma calibration radiocarbon date on charcoal recovered from the lowest fill of the kiln produced a date of cal. AD 780 to 1020. (Noonan 2003e, 29-30; Noonan et al., 2004)
