House - indeterminate date

The National Monuments Service's description

Within the SE quadrant of a cashel (CL005-160002-) located in rough elevated pasture with clear views in all directions and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-160001-). The cashel is hachured on the 1839 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps, but the house is not marked on either map. Westropp (1911, 358) noted the ‘foundations of late houses’ within the garth, opining that the cashel ‘was evidently inhabited down to the eighteenth or even the nineteenth century’. 

 

The foundations of a house orientated NW-SE (int. 8m E-W; 4.8m N-S) almost abutting the interior cashel wall at the SE. The house is defined by grass-covered walls (Wth 0.6-1m; H 0.5m) and is divided into two rooms with an entrance (Wth 0.8m) in its W wall. A second more extant drystone house is located c. 10m to the NW in the W half of the cashel. The houses are named ‘Sheepfolds’ on the 25-inch OS map.
