History
The construction of the Saint-Etienne canal allows for the irrigation of sugarcane fields, the water supply to sugar refineries, urban residences and fountains of the city. In 1932, a public laundry is constructed in the middle of a sugarcane field, in the western periphery of Saint-Pierre.
