Historique
En 1854 débutent les travaux du port de Saint-Pierre, sous l'impulsion du gouverneur Hubert Delisle. Le premier projet consiste à aménager deux jetées et un épi afin d'abriter de la houle les deux bassins naturels. Ces travaux étant insuffisants, le creusement d'une nouvelle darse abritée est envisagé, nécessitant le percement de la plaque corallienne. Le creusement du chenal d'accès est achevé en 1883, date de l'inauguration du port qui peut accueillir des navires de 4, 5m de tirant d'eau. A partir de 1886, des travaux permettent au port d'accueillir douze voiliers de cinq cents tonneaux. En marge du port est établie une forme de radoub, bassin creusé pour l'entretien et la réparation de la coque des bateaux. Pour mettre à sec la forme, l'entrée du bassin était bouchée et des pompes évacuaient l'eau pour permettre les réparations.

History
In 1854 work began on the port of Saint-Pierre, under the impetus of governor Hubert Delisle. The first project consisted of constructing two jetties and a spur to shelter the two natural basins from swell. These works being insufficient, the excavation of a new sheltered dock was envisaged, requiring the piercing of the coral plate. The excavation of the access channel was completed in 1883, the date of the inauguration of the port which could accommodate ships with a draught of 4.5m. From 1886, works enabled the port to accommodate twelve sailing ships of five hundred tons. At the edge of the port a dry dock was established, a basin dug for the maintenance and repair of ship hulls. To dry out the dock, the entrance to the basin was sealed and pumps evacuated the water to permit repairs.
