Le bassin fut réalisé entre 1864 et 1868. Le chantier s'inscrit dans un mouvement de construction et d'aménagement de bassins identiques qui ont influencé sa conception : Toulon et Lorient en 1854, Cherbourg en 1858 et Rochefort (forme Napoléon III) entre 1853 et 1861. La construction est en pierre de taille pour ce qui concerne la partie ancienne et en béton pour l'extension aménagée un siècle plus tard. History
The basin was constructed between 1864 and 1868. The project was part of a movement of construction and development of identical basins that influenced its design: Toulon and Lorient in 1854, Cherbourg in 1858 and Rochefort (Napoleon III form) between 1853 and 1861. Construction is in dressed stone for the older part and in concrete for the extension developed a century later.
