Vers le milieu du 18e siècle, les gouverneurs de Martinique s'installent à cet emplacement. L'édifice actuel est construit en 1923 par l'architecte Germain Olivier. Il devient le siège de la préfecture en 1946. Le 19 mars 1946, la départementalisation des anciennes colonies des Antilles, de la Guyane et de la Réunion est votée. L'édifice du gouvernement prend le nom de Préfecture. Ce n'est toutefois que le 23 août 1947 qu'eut lieu la cérémonie d'installation. D'une architecture d'inspiration classique, la façade est percée d'un rythme régulier. On accède au rez-de-chaussée construit sur un soubassement par un large emmarchement. Les éléments décoratifs de la façade sont composés d'ordres superposés. Le rez-de-chaussée comprend des éléments d'ordre d'inspiration dorique, tandis que pour l'étage est employé un ordre d'inspiration ionique. Un entablement surmonté de balustres dissimule une couverture en tuile mécanique à quatre versants. Les menuiseries sont en bois et lames persiennées. Les portes principales du rez-de-chaussée sont en ferronnerie.

History
Around the middle of the 18th century, the governors of Martinique established themselves at this location. The present edifice was constructed in 1923 by the architect Germain Olivier.
