After leading a hermitic life, Abbé Geoffroy founded a community of Augustinian canons at Le Chalard in 1088. He undertook the construction of the monastery in 1096. The church was consecrated in 1100. In 1150, a papal bull confirmed the autonomy of the monastery and its foundations. From 1419 to 1423, the English occupied Le Chalard under siege and the monastery was partly ruined. Arrangements were made at the end of the 15th century and in the 18th century. The decline of the community continued until the Revolution, at which time the buildings were sold. Of the original buildings remain the choir and transept of the church, as well as the building housing the chapter house, the former monks' dormitory and another fortified building. The chapter house contains three granite sarcophagi and two grave slabs, one of which is decorated. Restorations were carried out in the 1830s-1840s.
