History

From 1871 onwards, Jewish textile industrialists settled in Elbeuf. Worship was celebrated in a private building before the present synagogue was built, no doubt at the same location, in 1909. The building was constituted by integration into two brick dwellings separated by a garden, each having a façade on the street, characteristic of the urbanisation of the district around 1850. Each façade was dressed with Moorish decoration with a cornice surmounted by the Tables of the Law. The western dwelling served as a vestibule for the sanctuary and, on the upper floor, as the rabbi's apartment. The eastern dwelling was completely hollowed out to constitute the eastern part of the sanctuary, the western part of the latter occupying the site of the former garden. The sanctuary comprises to the west a nave surmounted by two lateral galleries on posts, to the east a reading platform, the bima, on which stands the Holy Ark placed against the east wall.
