In 1904, the joint-stock company A. André Fils received authorization to operate a petroleum refinery opposite the Chantiers de Normandie. Its activity only really commenced in 1908. In 1922, the Société maritime des Pétroles succeeded A. André et Fils company. That same year, Auguste Perret was entrusted with the construction of houses for the factory director and for the foremen. For the latter, twin houses with rectangular plan were built, having a square storey covered with a flat roof. Reinforced concrete was used for the roof structure, the distribution staircase and the external walls. Flint was used for the plinth and solid brick for the interior walls. The director's dwelling follows the same design. In 1925 and 1926, these houses were published in the specialist journals L'architecture vivante and La construction moderne. In 1929, the Société maritime des Pétroles was absorbed by the Société des Pétroles Jupiter. The refining installations were set on fire on 9 June 1940 before the arrival of the German army. At their location is now installed the Van Leer metal working factory which reuses the former director's house as the works committee room and union office. The foremen's lodgings belong to a waste incineration plant recently built at the location of the Chantiers de Normandie. This construction illustrates the debates at the beginning of the 20th century on economical housing that could be produced in series and also presents an interest for the history of working-class housing.
