Historique
Lion édifié à la mémoire du colonel Denfert-Rochereau, défenseur de Belfort durant la guerre franco-prussienne. Sculpté par Bartholdi, l'artiste en présente un modèle en plâtre au Salon de 1878, acheté par la ville de Paris. Lion en plaques de cuivre repoussé, haut de quatre mètres sur sept de long. Un médaillon en bronze à l'effigie du colonel est ajouté en 1920. L'actuel médaillon est une substitution datant de 1979. Le lion est inauguré en 1880.

History
Lion erected in memory of colonel Denfert-Rochereau, defender of Belfort during the Franco-Prussian War. Sculpted by Bartholdi, the artist presents a plaster model of it at the 1878 Salon, purchased by the city of Paris. Lion in sheets of repoussé copper, four metres high by seven metres long. A bronze medallion bearing the effigy of the colonel is added in 1920. The current medallion is a replacement dating from 1979. The lion is inaugurated in 1880.
