The history of the CNRS solar furnaces in Cerdagne begins at Meudon in 1946. The solar energy laboratory is directed there by Félix Trombe with Marc Foex and Charlotte Henry La Blanchetais who work on the first experimental programme for obtaining high temperatures using solar radiation concentration, thus renewing the work of Lavoisier in the 18th century. The construction of a 50 kW furnace at Mont-Louis is due to the personality of Félix Trombe. It was his meeting with General Bergeron that led to the installation of the laboratory in the northern, military part of the citadel in 1948. This furnace is designed as a prototype. It will result in the relocation of the CNRS laboratories to Odeillo in 1968.
