Description
L'arc s'élève à près de 5 mètres de haut. Il repose sur des piédroits maçonnés élégamment rythmés par des bossages vermiculés rompant l'uniformité de la maçonnerie. L'arche est cantonnée par deux pilastres s'ornant de palmes colossales qui semblent ciselées, leur raideur n'empêchant pas une certaine grâce. Les écoinçons de l'arc introduisent une note colorée faisant jouer les rouges de la pierre d'Estandeuil avec le blanc crème de Montpeyroux sur un motif de lambrequins. L'entablement comporte une architrave à deux fasces surmontée d'une frise rythmée de triglyphes et de métopes nues. Latéralement et au même niveau les pilastres sont ornés d'une croix de la légion d'honneur en bas-relief. Un fronton couronne enfin une corniche à larmier et cimaise et portant l'inscription en grandes lettres rouges « Aux soldats de la Grande Guerre ». Le revers du monument affiche une stricte identité de l'avers mais d'une plus grande sobriété dans le décor du fait de l'absence des hautes palmes. Quant à l'inscription, elle exprime la gratitude de la Ville de Riom : « La Ville de Riom reconnaissante ». La polychromie du monument essuya, semble-t-il, les critiques d'une partie de la population (elle fut comparée à la faïence d'un vulgaire fourneau) et Ruprich-Robert s'empressa de demander au maire de bien vouloir substituer de la pierre de Volvic en lieu et place des pierres de Montpeyroux et d'Estandeuil, vœu qui ne fut de toute évidence pas exaucé. Les plans de ce monument sont signés Ruprich-Robert, architecte en chef des monuments historiques. Le projet fait apparaître un arc à l'antique cintré inspiré directement de l'Arc funéraire de Sextius Campanus d'Aix-les-Bains (fin du Ier s. ap. J.-C.), dont la municipalité demande « photographies et mensurations » au Ministre de l'Instruction publique et des Beaux-Arts en 1920.

Description
