L'extension des fortifications hors de l'enceinte primitive fut entreprise à la fin du 12ème siècle. De nombreuses campagnes de travaux furent engagées dont la plus importante est celle intervenue au milieu du 14ème siècle. Au 16ème siècle, l'enceinte fait l'objet d'aménagements afin de l'adapter à l'évolution de l'artillerie. L'union de la ville avec Clermont au 17ème siècle, l'évolution urbaine aux 19ème et 20ème siècle ainsi que les bombardements lors de le seconde guerre mondiale contribueront fortement à la déliquescence des remparts. Aujourd'hui, seuls 900 mètres de remparts subsistent de l'enceinte médiévales du 13ème siècle ainsi que les vestiges de 12 tours et quelques contreforts d'épaulement.

History
The extension of fortifications beyond the original perimeter was undertaken at the end of the 12th century. Numerous construction campaigns were carried out, the most important of which took place in the middle of the 14th century. In the 16th century, the perimeter was subject to modifications in order to adapt it to the evolution of artillery. The union of the city with Clermont in the 17th century, urban development in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as bombardments during the Second World War contributed greatly to the deterioration of the ramparts. Today, only 900 metres of ramparts remain from the medieval perimeter of the 13th century as well as the vestiges of 12 towers and several buttresses.
