Construit dans les années 1930 par l'architecte Albéric Aubert, l'hôpital sanatorium correspond au mouvement de construction hospitalière liée aux progrès de la médecine et à l'inadaptation des anciens équipements face aux grandes maladies transmissibles. Cet édifice s'inscrit dans le mouvement fonctionnaliste inspiré par le Bauhaus et par la pensée de Le Corbusier et Gropius, s'appuyant sur les principes de fonctionnalisme (clarté, simplicité des lignes, horizontalité, matériaux modernes). Ce site est appelé à devenir la future École d'Architecture de Clermont-Ferrand. Ses larges baies horizontales, la prépondérance de la couleur blanche, sa cinquième façade constituée par la terrasse et sa composition claire et formelle sont caractéristiques de ce courant architectural. Une coupole en béton en partie translucide se révèlera à nouveau à la lumière zénithale lorsque disparaîtra la couverture qui la cache de la lumière du jour. Il dispose d'une situation exceptionnelle dans le Puy de Chanturgue et se pose dans le paysage à la façon d'un phare. L'hôpital a été racheté par l'Etat en vue d'y installer une école d'architecture (opération pilotée par l'EMOC).

History
