L'exploitation de la fosse n°8 commence en 1913. L'activité s'arrête pendant la Grande guerre pour ne reprendre qu'après dénoyage des fosses sabotées. Les bâtiments d'exploitation sont reconstruits dans les années 1920. En 1923, les installations provisoires destinées à permettre la reprise des travaux du puits n°8 et le fonçage du puits n°8 bis pour servir de retour d'air sont achevés. En 1926 et 1927, achèvement du montage de la machine d'extraction du puits n°8, de ses chevalement et bâtiment d'extraction. Après la nationalisation, la fosse n°8 est reliée à la n°7. Le puits n°8 bis est approfondi en 1956 et l'extraction interrompue en 1961 suite à la mise en fonctionnement de la fosse n°10 de Dourges. La fosse n°8 est alors affectée à la circulation du personnel grâce à l'installation de nouvelles cages. En 1968, la fosse n°8 est reliée aux fosses n°9 et 10 à Oignies par l'étage 630, et reprend le personnel de la fosse n°7 fermée peu avant. Le chevalement, ancien et inadapté, est remplacé en mars de la même année par celui récupéré du puis n°3 ter des mines de Marles. La machine d'extraction est également remplacée par une machine à poulie Koepe de 1800 CV. Le bâtiment du puits n°8 bis abritera une installation de ventilation. La fosse n°8 cesse de fonctionner en 1973. Les puits sont utilisés pour l'exhaure des travaux de la concentration de la fosse 10 jusqu'en 1991. A cette date, le site est déclaré hors service, les câbles sont démontés, le puits n° remblayé et le chevalement 8 bis abattu.
