En 1950, la ville du Cateau-Cambresis décide de construire un ensemble scolaire destiné aux enfants en bas âge. Le 22 mai 1951, la commune confie le projet à Ernest Gaillard, figure cambrésienne très connue dans la région. Pour la construction du nouveau groupe scolaire, l'architecte sollicite le peintre Henri Matisse qui offre à la commune le vitrail les abeilles, composition issue du premier projet élaboré en 1948 pour la chapelle de Vence. Le 11 avril 1952, le conseil municipal adopte le programme afférent à la construction du groupe scolaire, soit un programme en trois phases : une école maternelle, une école primaire des filles, une école primaire de garçons, auxquelles sera ajouté un programme de logement pour les deux directrices, le directeur et deux adjoints. L'opération, subventionnée par l'Etat et le Département, consacre 1 % du montant global des travaux à l'aide aux artistes. Cela a permis la réalisation du vitrail conçu par Matisse, réalisé par le maître verrier Paul Bony. Le groupe scolaire est inauguré le 2 octobre 1955, tandis que Matisse décède le 3 novembre et que les vitraux sont installés à la fin du mois de décembre.

History
In 1950, the town of Cateau-Cambresis decided to build a school complex for young children. On 22 May 1951, the commune entrusted the project to Ernest Gaillard, a very well-known figure in the Cambresis region.
